Southern France is filled with sunshine, lavender fields, olive groves, vineyards, and perched villages. The seafood served here, whether a simple soupe de poisson or bouillabaisse fish stew, comes straight from the Mediterranean. Delicious local lamb and taureau (bull’s meat) are available if you ever tire of the seafood. You will appreciate not only the sensory delights of the scenery and food but also the rich history Provence has to offer. The Romans left behind coliseums, amphitheaters, monuments, and a 2000 year old, three-story aqueduct, and the medieval popes who based themselves in Avignon left us the Palais des Papes.
Le Gounod will be our home for five nights. In 1863 Charles Gounod stayed here and composed his famous opera Mirelle. The hotel features very-friendly service, a pool, garden and tearoom with a Baroque-inspired décor. Breakfast is served either in the beautiful tearoom or outdoors on the hotel’s terrace. The hotel is located on one of the town squares.
Saint Remy with its tree-lined streets, squares, and fountains is an artists’ town. Van Gogh was so inspired by the town that he completed more than 150 paintings during the year he spent here. You will enjoy browsing in the elegant boutiques and more than 20 art galleries. You will want to take your time and savor the sights and smells at the weekly market located steps from the entrance to our hotel. Among the many cultural attractions Saint Remy has to offer are the Musee des Alpilles, the birthplace of Nostradamus, the Eglise St. Martin, the Van Gogh Art Center, and the Musee des Aromes.
The St Remy Tennis Club, a few minutes walk from our hotel, will be where we play during our stay.
